Day 13...CARBS!

...they have been bashed around in the media more than Lindsey Lohan...
...are they good, bad...what are they for? do they make you fat?

...well, here is the basic skinny on carbs...

...carbs are comprised of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen...
...the basic structure of all carbs are very similar...with the difference of some fibres, vitamins, minerals and COMPLEXITY...


Carbs are needed for energy throughout your day.  They provide your working muscles and BRAIN with energy to function over the day.

We need them for basic metabolic processes and they fuel the body during workouts and ELITE Performances.  Carbs (CHO) come in a number of shapes and sizes...you have heard the terms simple and complex carbs... well simple are the sugars, they generally have the OSE suffix at the end of their name ..(glucose, fructose, dextrose, lactose...etc)..they provide a quick boost of energy, but break down very quickly...

a complex CHO...breaks down more slowly (released) and provides us with a longer, more sustained level of muscle energy...hence the pre-game meal of pasta (a complex carb)...energy that lasts for a long time...AND HOLDS WATER WITH IT!!!....great for a long game of hockey or football...or running...or...well pretty much most endurance length sports... (every g of cho holds onto 3 g of h20...a great hydration tool!)

where CHO's get a bad wrap is they are very easily stored as fat...if you don't use up the energy from the food...the next thing you know you are shopping for a new belt!

...as this journey progresses...here are some tips for your CHO consumption that will save you money on a new wardrobe...

1- if you need a sugar fix...try it in the morning at breakfast...less apt to suffer from the carb "come-down"
2- let's stay away from CHO's that end in OSE...pick up the package...look for one of those words..if it is there, put it down.
3- though fruits are packed with FRUCTOSE...it is a naturally occurring sugar and the good things that ride "shot-gun" to the sugar are pretty good for you...(packed with vitamins and fibre) so this one is a toss up...many good things..but the sugar is going to have you out belt shopping (if you are not active in no time)...here is a tip...fruit is a great way to start the day, enjoy pre workout or as a dessert substitute...stay away from fruit in the evening!!!
4-...vegetables are CHO's!!! if they are green...even better...try to have 3 big servings of green vegetables (spinach is an ELITE favorite!!) daily...great source of CHO's, vitamins and fibre...


Carbs are the fuel you need to fuel your ELITE lifestyle...
Fuel comes in a bunch of different grades...let's make sure we stay away from the regular (simple carbs) and fill are tanks with premium (complex)...it will make your ride that much more smooth!
