...persistence and determination...

...12 years ago this month the concept of ELITE was born...I was with the Blue Bombers at the time and the infamous Jeff Reinebold (head coach) and I were training at Panther Gym in Edmonton.   Far from the gleaming equipment of the other clubs, this small underground box (not unlike the sweat box on Ness), was filled to the brim with athletes on a quest for greatness...I thought, add in some great programming, trainers and therapy and we would be ready to roll...

...this had never been done in Winnipeg (or ever for all I know), there was no model, no recipe just a love for what I did, 12 years of early mornings, late nights and balancing nearly 2 jobs with the Bombers (Head Trainer and Asst. Director of Football Operations) made for days that I could have easily taken the easy way out...

...the thing was, I KNEW "we" could do it... after nearly 12 years, now just shy of 11 000 athletes touched by ELITE, and having spawned a "school" of other performance centers I am looking at the poster on the wall of ELITE that has been here since day 1,

Nothing in the world takes the place of persistence

Education will not...the world is full of educated failures.
Genius will not...unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Talent will not...there is nothing more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent...

...getting better is a tough thing to do, being your best is even harder...it is not for everyone and if you are wondering why it is not happening for you I can only give you 2 reasons

1- You are NOT training at ELITE.
2- You are NOT being honest with yourself...because "it" only comes with your BEST effort.  Don't take the easy way out and make excuses...do a gut check and "strap it up"...YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Here it is-

Eric Dunton, after placing 3rd in the WORLD'S (firefighter and police games) last week, brought his hardware into ELITE today...still looking a few meals short, it was great to see our good pal at "home" again...take some time...can I buy you a sandwich...PLEASE?

The CANADA SUMMER GAMES TEAM- RUGBY: Wrapped up it's training season tonight with a session out at Southport!  It has been 10 long months...use the tools and go "bust some chops".  Have fun and remember, you and your actions represent everything we have tried to create...it is up to you now.  Your pal, fISH

WANDA GUENETTE- is off with her CSG TEAM as well...after her team won provincials in at the BEACH FOR LIFE, tournament on the weekend....I think they are ready to go...great job with your team Wanda! Thanks for letting us be part of their success...good luck from all of us.

Doug Brown- CFL CANADIAN OF THE WEEK, ELITE CLIENT....need I say more?

Kris Buddick is testing his steel again this coming weekend at his 4th triathlon of the summer... it is that time my friend, do what you know you can do...it is yours.

Nationals for the CBBF coming up this weekend...best of luck to our 4 "girls"...LET'S TURN THE COMPETITION INTO SPECTATORS.

Pick up the newest edition of HotDog Sports in newsstands all over the city, with another one soon to be released...

...folks it is not going to be easy...but I promise it will build character and strength...
IT IS ELITE NATION...

Onward and Upward,
fISH

PS- Dr Ren...I am very honored to know someone who tackles life in the trenches like you do and does it with such courage and grace.  Namaste.

    Hey fISH,

It's Mooney. I have a question I am hoping to get your advice on (I don't have your email address at work and can't access gmail here so I thought I might get you this way as it says these will go to the moderator first. I am also going to send this to what I think might be your email, so apologies if I ask twice).

Last week I worked 127 hours and saw the sun rise from my desk 3 times. This week isn't quite as rough, but I am on pace to hit 240 hours in 2 weeks. I am out of shape (not as bad as xmas, but close), sleep deprived and don't have an ideal diet. I tried your May challenge and only got 8 hours of sleep 3 times. A couple of weeks ago I began talking to ultramarathoner Ray Zahab (check him out, impressive) and talked my way (sort of) into joining him on a run this weekend. Having never actually even run a marathon, this was always ambitious. Realistically, I shouldn't even have consider it (but I was never a fan of reality, its too restricting). However, given my lack of training and sleep over the past month I began debating not even doing it.

Then I got your blog post. For 7 years I read that Persistence & Determination Poster every time I walked into Elite…and that mantra continually helped me overachieve and exceed what I thought was my potential. And then I read your 2 reasons…..1- You are NOT training at ELITE. 2- You are NOT being honest with yourself...because "it" only comes with your BEST effort. Don't take the easy way out and make excuses...do a gut check and "strap it up"...YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN.
I can't fix #1 right now…but I realized #2 is entirely in my control. The reasons I listed above that made me consider not trying are only excuses. And while I have failed to prepare, and therefore might not finish, if I don't "do a gut check and 'strap it up'" I have 0 chance in making it happen.
So I am hoping I can tap into your knowledge base….Saturday (likely at 12am), I am going to start running in Montreal with the plan of stopping when I get to Ottawa (~215KM from start - finish). So any advice you can throw my way….on diet (both before and during) and anything else would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much,
    Mooney
